The What's Happening Myron Book Club

Established in 2010, the What’s Happening Myron Book Club has grown to well over 200 members. Each month, members of the book club meet up to discuss the “featured selection” of the month and participate in other activities such as the “Hey Myron” relationship segment!

The book selection typically reflects the demographic of the members which consist of the overall WHM demographic. Although the selections are primarily national authors, the book club does spotlight a local author each month that attends and speaks to the group regarding their book and background.

December Book Club Recap: Dywuanna Sykes

As for this month’s event, it was a lot of fun. We had a great time as usual and on the real, McKinley’s is the right spot for event such as this one. Just thought I’d mention that. Local author Dywuanna Sykes was such an inspiration to the audience and she inspired us with her story of beating cancer.

I think it’s amazing that sometimes we go through things in life that we think happens to us to take us out. But then as we learn more about purpose, we start to understand that sometimes we have to go through things in life in order to help us to realize what our purpose is. I believe her purpose is to inspire others to overcome their odds and move past their situation. Someone was touched that day.

One of my favorite parts was the Q&A discussion via Skype with Ms. Murray. She was a great interview. She mentioned that the book will become a movie in the later part of 2015. It will be a limited release similar to Zane’s “Addicted”. I was curious to find out who would be cast in the film. She wouldn’t divulge any info. I tried though to get it out of her though. Lol.

We also did the “Hey Myron” relationship discussion. This was off the chain…once again that is. This is becoming a really popular part of the event as well. I figured, it was so much fun, let’s just do it again right?

November Meet-Up Recap

After the November Book Club Meet-Up, all I can say is WOW! I don’t know about anyone else, but I had a wonderful time. Everyone else did too by the way. I can see this Book Club evolving right before my eyes!

Of course, you know I write a relationship column for Southern Soul Magazine call "Hey Myron" right? Well, I decided to do something a little different and add a “Hey Myron” feature to the event and it went over VERY well. Those in attendance enjoyed this and really had a lot to say. Needless to say, we will do “Hey Myron” every month now.

Our local author Shana Jay was wonderful! I get the sense that she is gonna go a long way. McKinley’s Restaurant is definitely a great location for our Book Club Meet-Ups. The food, the staff and the spot is on point. And "you", the participants we wonderful as well!

Look...if you haven’t made it out to a Book Club Meet-Up, you need to stop missing out on a great time. The WHM Book Club is nothing like any other book club you have experienced. But if you’re not there…you’ll never experience it.

Now it’s time to make plans for December. We will discuss our latest Book Selection “The Deal, the Dance and the Devil” by Victoria Christopher Murray. Shelia Whalum Book Signing

From Author Sheila Whalum comes another eye-opening read as she releases yet another book on relationships, Why Love Doesn’t Last. In this, her fourth book, she gives many instances of a love gone.

“After assessing the situation of many relationships, single and married couples, the picture wasn’t pretty. I thought, why is it that so many couples are not in love? They have been together for several years but were no longer in love. What happened? The answer is in my page turning book, say Whalum”.

She will be signing copies of her book and holding a discussion hosted by Bev Johnson of AM 1070 WDIA on Saturday November 15th from 2:00 - 4:00pm at The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, 1934 Poplar Avenue.

November Local Featured Author: Shana Jay

Shana Jay (born Shana Bibbs Hampton) is an only child born to Antonio C. Bibbs and Jennifer M. Bibbs Kilgore in Memphis, TN. What began as personal journal entries soon evolved into poetry as she allowed her more creative side to chronicle the events that took place in her life. Her debut book A Piece of My Heart was a pure and honest revelation of the woman that resides within. Now with her sophomore collection, A Piece of My Heart: The Unedited Truth, Shana has revealed another layer of her soul.

Shana has known love, joy, heartache, pain and triumph. According to her, she wrote her first two books to let others know that they are not alone.

“Writing, for me, became a release that helped me to peel away layers of my soul that I want to share with my readers”.

October Meet Up: ”If I Can’t Have You” by Mary B. Morrison

We had a great time at the October Book Club Meet Up as local author Sharon Fields stopped by to speak about her book, “Overcomer: Rising Above Life’s Adversities”. She had a very compelling story that lead to her sharing it in her book. I recommend you reading more about her and purchasing a copy of her book. We also discussed the featured selection, “If I Can’t Have You” by Mary B. Morrison. That book and those characters were most certainly off the chain.

October Local Featured Author: Sharon Fields

Sharon Fields is the proud mother of 3 responsible and caring young men, Kenderras, Juwan and Quelon Fields. She is 43 years of age and the Site Director of the Neighborhood Christian Center-Chickasaw. Sharon graduated with honors from the Fayette Ware Comprehensive High School in Somerville, TN 26 years ago. She is a faithful elder at the Pursuit of God Transformation Center. She served 9 years as Children’s Ministry Director and was recently promoted as the Youth-Leaders Enrichment Specialist, which recruits, trains and oversees all aspects of youth ministry at the POG. She is very committed to soul winning, praying for and serving others. Sharon is an alumnus of Southwest Tennessee Community College

Sharon has roots in the performing arts, her teen years she was the lead psalmist for the Fredonia Baptist Church Youth Choir and one of the lead sopranos for the mass choir. Sharon has written and directed a Christmas play, “The Last Christmas” which debut in December 2009 at the Transformation Center. She possesses a wide variety of creative skills which include acting, directing, editing and writing.

Sharon is also an over comer of child molestation, alcoholism, abandonment and rejection. At age 17, Sharon was pregnant and homeless. She experienced a pre-term stillbirth that put her health in jeopardy. Her quest for love drove her into the arms of many men, during early 20’s she became a functioning alcoholic. Drinking everyday was the way to cope with the anger, loneliness and disappointment. God is still transforming her into His image and she is passionate about young women discovering their purpose and living a life free from addictions and emotional pain.

She will be discussing her book “Overcomer” and her background at the What’s Happening Myron Book Club Meet-Up on Saturday October 18^th from 4-6pm at Panera Bread, 4530 Poplar Avenue in the Laurelwood Shopping Center. We’d love to see you there.

The 2014 Black Writers & Book Club Festival

It looks like it was another successful year for the Black Writers and Book Club Festival. The Memphis Hilton was loaded with great speakers and a great crowd who had a great time. The WHM Book Club walked away with its first award for “The Most Authors Hosted”. In its third year, the BWABC is an annual festival promoting literacy by connecting authors with avid readers and book clubs. It is held in September during National Literacy Month.

Meet, engage and network with authors, book clubs and avid readers from across the nation, purchase books to support literacy, walk the book club ‘red carpet, participate in games, win door prizes, attend book club panel discussions, enter essay contests to win a number of prizes! Place this on your calendar for 2015, the BWABC will be held on September 18 & 19^th. More details to come.

In the meantime we are back on track with the Book Club meet ups. July Meeting: "A Social Affair" by Pat Tucker & Earl Sewell

July was another great month at the What’s Happening Myron Book Club Meet-Up! Our featured selection was a wild one, “A Social Affair by Pat Tucker & Earl Sewell. This book was really a trip. If you missed last month, just drop by the library and grab a copy or reach out to someone in the club to borrow theirs. You’ll be in for wild ride. We also heard from local author Fredrick Williams, who told his story of how he was able to take a background of bad choices and turn them into an opportunity to totally turn his life around. July Local Featured Author: Fredrick Williams

Fred Williams was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. He decided to write True fiction Novels while fighting multiple charges at 201 Poplar or the University of the Streets of Memphis. Those of us who graduated never go back. Riding Chrome is the first of many stories to be told and the introduction to a new company, Green Ink Publishing House.
He is our local featured author for the July Book Club Meet up. His novel is called "Riding Chrome".

About Riding Chrome:
Growing up in any inner city is rough especially with drugs, gangs and crime. Memphis, Tennessee is no exception. You have to make a choice, hit the streets with your boys or the church house with grandma. Rodney or shall we call him Hot-Rod, jumped off the porch at 15 years old and wasn’t headed to church or school. With momma still the life and no positive direction, this young man followed the path laid by his favorite rap group 3-6 Mafia and his dope smoking, car stealing best friend Slim Jim. He met all sorts of people along the way, some real, some fake, but things changed when he met the love of his life Brittany.

For the first time he had some kind of positive force in his life. After Hot-Rod hit a brick wall and had no choice but to go to prison. TT took his cell mate and the jail house Chaplin to lead him back to the life that grandma wanted to introduce him to.

Also included as bonus reading material is the constitution of the United States, the written law for brothers and sisters still incarcerated awaiting trial. Don’t give up!

Ms. Stevens is not just an author, she is a motivational speaker and her book is not only empower mothers to offer their very best in the lives of their children, it is also a "movement". May Local featured Author: Delmar Johnson

April of 2011, I decided to add a book club to my list of many things I do. Each month I would feature a local author and spotlight them on the What’s Happening Myron website. It became such a success that starting in January of 2013, I decided to make the What’s Happening Myron Book Club one that had regular meetings and “real” physical members. That way our readers could get together once per month, meet each other. It turned out to be successful as well. And here we are over 200 members later celebrating our 3rd year in existence.

So to celebrate, this month May 24th from 4-7pm, the WHM Book Club meeting will be held at The Rejuvenation Center, 5200 Park Avenue, LL1. "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich" by J.D. Mason

Join us on this Saturday April 19^th from 4-6 for the What’s Happening Myron Book Club Meeting! It takes place at OTHERLANDS Coffee Bar located at 641 Cooper in Midtown Memphis. Our local featured author will be Marie Pizano. She will talk about her book “From Barefoot to Stilettos”.

March Meeting at TJ Mulligans: Deadly Stuff Players by Flo Anthony

Last month at the Whats Happening Myron Book Club Meeting, we got a chance to hear from local author Kelvin Cowans, who has written 6 books. The audience was intrigued to hear of two of his books in particular, "The Most Evil Person I Ever Met: My Time in Prison with Lemaricus Davidson" as well as "1st Down & 100 Years to Go. The Xavier Cordell Crawford Story".

Our featured selection was Deadly Stuff Players by Flo Anthony. Ms. Anthony was the featured speaker for the February meeting, so we decided to feature book as the selection for the month of March.

March Local Featured Author: Kelvin Cowans

Kelvin Dewayne Cowans aka "Six~Four" is an Author, Free Lance Writer and Music Producer from Memphis,Tn. Raised in three different neighborhoods by the age of 18, he had enough material in his head from life experiences to keep the average reader on the edge of their seat.

A 1994 graduate of Kirby High School he chased his dream of one day playing in the N.B.A. with "3 a Day" work outs and taking the ACT 3 times landed him a spot on the Chattanooga State Technical Community College Basketball team in 1995. However wouldn't be long that his dream of playing in the N.B.A was cut short after getting into a serious fight with a fellow teammate that landed them both in the Hospital and off the team.

Fast forward, back home in Memphis he became a noticeable figure in every night club in the city. Known for dressing nice, riding clean, having plenty of money, women and a short temper he and his crew shot basketball during the day and robbed whom ever they could find and any business establishment that dared to stay open past 11pm. He's well quoted in saying that back then "Everyday felt like saturday" for him and his robbing friends. It was these very crimes that lasted a total of 5 years with over 30 robberies in tow that put Kelvin and his crew behind prison walls in 2002. With time comes a change, sometimes good, sometimes bad but a change. For Kelvin it was good and the solitude of prison produced an unquenchable thirst to write.

Writing had been a minimal tool in his life only used to get by to do school work and stay on the basketball teams of which he played on. Now it was a survival tactic which grew from 1 book in 2004 to 7 in 2014. "Eye for an Eye", "The Most Evil Person I've Ever Met, My Time in Prison with Lemaricus Davidson" and "1st Down & 100 Years to Go, The Xavier Cordell Crawford Story" are his first books he's made public. After reading only a few chapters of any of his books many people have said that it felt like they were watching a movie due to his God's given gift of painting a mental picture of his subjects comparable to a paint artist.

Nominated for Best Author in Memphis,Tn for the "Best in Black Awards in "2012" and "2013" it's clear he's on the right track for success. His executive Editor Dr. Karanja Ajanaku of the Memphis,Tn Tri-State Defender Newspaper located at 203 Beale Street has shaken his head in amazement a many days when receiving Kelvin's Commentaries and Interviews, noting that the man thinks differently than most and is some how able to put it on paper just as he thinks it. A Freelance Writer for the newspaper since 2011 his articles have made the Front Page 17 times with high lighted interviews with (Rapper) T.I., Vernon Winfrey (Oprahs Father), Dr. Steve Perry (TV ONE) etc. Coupled with article titles such as "The pizza, the pistol and the prayer", "Keep Ida B. Wells Name out that park mess" and "Social T.K.O." this train in style writer has a destination of painfully truthful, socially accepted, consciously available and wealthy.

Last month Flo was our special guest. We had such a great time, we decided to feature her book as out March selection. February Meeting at TJ Mulligans: "Fly Betty" by Treasure Blue

If you didn’t get a chance to join us at the February Book Club Meeting, you missed a great time. Our featured selection was "Fly Betty" by Treasure Blue.Not only did we have a great local author, Angel Ray, we had a fabulous national author Flo Anthony as well. Not only was the book signing we held at Barnes & Noble great success, so was the meeting also.

It was nice of WDIA’s Bev Johnson to drop by. It was very heartwarming to see Flo reconnect with Bev. They have been friends since 2nd grade. We even sold out of all of the books we brought to the Book Club! Our local author Angel Ray was impressive as well. She is only 17 and well on her way to greatness.

March is gonna be exciting as well. We’re reading Flo’s book “Deadly Stuff Players” and we will also welcome local author Kevin Cowans.
