January Local Featured Author: Miriam Cauley

Join us for the January Meeting as we welcome local author Miriam Cauley, author of “Through the Eyes of Mine”. Born and raised in Memphis, Cauley is a single mother and has supported her son by working as an administrative assistant while obtaining her college degree; however her passions for expressing herself through her poetry has remained in the forefront. Miriam was introduced to poetry in her English Literature class in High School and it was there she found her love for poets like Dr. Maya Angelou and NIkki Giovanni. She is also the daughter of Ben Cauley, former member of the Barkays, who she credits with fostering the spirit of ambition and surviving and thriving through adversities.

As a teenager, Miriam kept journals which allowed her to reach deep within to touch the emotions and situations she encountered. She believes that writing is the method to paint a canvas of what she feels. With her faith, her passion for people and her respect for humankind, it is her hope that her words demonstrate strength in the lives of others.

January Book Selection: The Twelve Tribes of Hattie by Ayana Mathis

The Twelve Tribes of Hattie by Ayana Mathis is our featured selection for January. "The Twelve Tribes of Hattie" is a New York Times Bestseller and is on the New York Times Notable Books of the Year list for 2013 and was chosen by Oprah Winfrey as the second selection for Oprah's Book Club.

As the novel opens, in the 1920s, Hattie is 17 years old and living with baby twins and her new husband, August, in a small house in Philadelphia. Hattie is lovely, intelligent and optimistic: she has fallen for the blandishments of the young man she's married, who assures her that their rented house is just temporary, and that soon they will buy a home of their own. But Hattie is also deceived by the equally empty promises of life in the north. Confident that this new place will offer equality and justice, Hattie names her twins Philadelphia and Jubilee, suggesting that the American Dream can be realised in the so-called cradle of freedom. But all her dreams will be betrayed: as the brief first chapter ends, Hattie's frantic efforts to keep her babies alive through a bout of pneumonia have failed, as the combined effects of the north's harsh winter and poverty kill them. Hattie never recovers from this loss, but she continues to have babies, and her nine children, along with one grandchild and the memory of her lost twins, constitute the 12 tribes of the title.

December Meeting at The Grindz: "The Family Business 2" by Carl Weber

What a great way to wrap up the year by setting the foundation for 2014. The first meeting at our new spot, The Grindz was a lot of fun. The vibe and atmosphere were great as well. And yes, the drinks were great as well.

I look forward to hanging out at The Grindz as this will be the new spot going forward. We wrapped up the year by finishing off the second installment of The Family Business by Carl Webber. The Duncan Family members are nothing to play with. I’m looking forward to the TV series which should kick off in the near future. Also, The Family Business 3 should be released sometimes during the Summer of 2014. We will be sure to revisit them when they return.

This January we kick off the New Year with “The Twelve Tribes of Hattie” by Ayana Mathis. The local featured author will be Miriam Cauley. She will discuss her book, “Through the Eyes of Mine”. A Conversation with Carl Webber

Author Carl Webber’s book The Family Business 2 is the December Selection for the What’s Happening Myron Book Club. I got the opportunity to speak with Mr. Webber a few weeks back at a book signing at Barnes & Nobles in Cordova. We talked about The Family Business, The Man in 3B, plans for TV and more!

How many Books have you written so far?

The Family Business 2 is number 18

How long have you been writing?

The first book came out in 2000 with Looking for Love. I’ve written a book every year, sometimes two. It’s been an interesting 14 years.

How did you come up with the concept of “The Family Business”?

A large part of it came from some friends of mine and the other part came when one of my business partners said that we need to do a television show and you need to come up with a concept. The first concept that came to mind was interested in the gangster and Godfather-esque type stories. So I started to develop the concept for the family business. I wanted to do something similar to Dallas with a lot more edge.

Tell us about The Family Business.

The Family Business is a 12 book series that will be a TV series in 2015. We’re shooting a pilot in April of 2014. It’s gonna be premium TV but I’m not allowed to give the network at this point until after the pilot is shot. So we have a rich family and there like a “Jeckell & Hyde” because they have a day job of running a one of the premier luxury car dealership in the country. Then their night job is keeping their family safe in a life of crime. It’s an interesting story that goes from a soap opera to a family drama to a crime story. There’s also a lot of mystery involved too.

Are any of your other books set to become TV series?

“The Man in 3B” movie is gonna be shot December 1^st to be released towards the tail end of 2014. We got a lot of irons in the fire right now.

Are there any actors attached to the project at this point?

We’re talking to Lance Gross, Lamman Rucker and Morris Chestnut. But Morris seems to want another part.

They are the head of their households, make all of the financial decisions and spend a large amount of their disposable income on entertainment, fashion and travel. They follow Myron Mays through his various media outlets; radio, television, print, web and social media. They are employed within a professional capacity and have an average of 2 children. Many of them have a bachelor’s degree with a large portion having at least some college. The majority of this demo spends an average of two hours per day collectively on Facebook and gets most of their news and information from the web. Their music choice is primarily the Urban Adult Contemporary format.

Each month, the book club members meet at a local establishment to discuss the “featured book” for the month. Although the selections are primarily national authors, the book club does spotlight a “local” author each month that attends and speaks to the group regarding their book and background.

December Local Featured Author: Megan Mottley

The local featured author for the December Book Club is Megan Mottley, who has been writing since she was a child. She is the author of “Glamour Girl: How To Get The Ultimate Makeover”. It wasn't until Megan reached college that she realized her talent for writing; she decided to operate fully in her gift and as a result has made quite an impact on her growing audience. To date, Megan has over 12 years of experience in the journalism industry and has worked in every facet of the media.

Megan earned a Bachelor of Arts in English (specializing in Professional/Technical Writing) from the University of Memphis. She also earned a Masters degree in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in Religion and Journalism from the University of Memphis. Megan worked as a freelance writer for 9 years and was published in Grace Magazine, Dateline Memphis Entertainment News, The Daily Helmsman, B. Visible Magazine, BRAVO Magazine, The Christian Banner-formerly Mid-South World, and PROUD Magazine. Megan worked as a Copywriter Intern at Clear Channel Radio and served as the Editor of PROUD Magazine and the Black Business Directory.

Megan launched her own publication, DIVINE Magazine, a high quality print and digital Inspirational Magazine, in 2007 which has won DMAG America’s Memphis Choice Award for Best Entertainment (2011) and she was also the recipient of Tri-State Defender’s 50 Women of Excellence Award (2011).

Megan is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated (Epsilon Kappa Chapter). Megan has a beautiful 12 year old daughter, Kaitlin, who reminds her that every day is worth living and worth celebrating.

December Book Selection: "The Family Business" 2 by Carl Webber

It’s back to “Business” for the WHM Book Club meeting for December. Last month we read the Family Business by Carl Webber and the first installment of the series was really good and we decided to read part 2. Also, we have a new location for the book club meeting in which I am very excited about.

The December Book Club meeting will be December 21st from 4 until 6pm at "The Grindz Coffee & Tea" located at 8195 Dexter Rd Ste 104 in Cordova. They have all kinds of coffee drinks, delicious sandwiches and more. The December selection is The “Family Business 2”, by Carl Webber of course and our local featured author will be Megan Mottley, the publisher of Divine Magazine. November Meeting at TJ Mulligans: “The Family Business” by Carl Webber

Isn’t it quite different reading something that has nothing to do with Reverend Curtis Black? However, the Duncan Family from “The Family Business” is not to be taken lightly…at all.

This series is off to a pretty heavy start as we discover that this family is dealing a lot more than just luxury vehicles and will stop at nothing to retain their power. “The Family Business” has been so good we have decided to read the second book in the series for December. I can’t wait to see what these people are going to do next. I’m sure it won’t be pretty at all.

November Local Featured Author: Pearl Walker-Ali

Pearl Walker-Ali isn’t called the Hair Deva” for nothing! With over a million locks twisted and being the third generation owner of Legacy Locks & Natural Styles, she knows a thing or two about natural hair.

She shares her natural hair philosophies and techniques with a diverse clientele that has included Eric Jerome Dickey, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Nakia Shine, James Alexander, and Shelby County Commissioner Henry Brooks. She is a natural hair care specialist who has worked with clients from a variety of racial/ethnic backgrounds. In addition to her background in natural hair, Pearl is also a talk show host, instructor, writer and lecturer as well.

Spring of 2013 she released her first book "Locks Braids & Natural Styles Things You Want to know Vol 1”.Pearl has been a licensed cosmetologist since 1988 and in April 2008 Walker was appointed by Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen to the State Cosmetology Board making her the first Natural Hair Stylist to serve on the board as well as the first to be re-appointed in December 2012.

Well, it’s on to new things for November as we move into another month and another book selection. We have spent the year on Kimberla Lawson Roby’s Curtis Black series and now we are back to picking selections month to month. The selection for November is “The Family Business” by author Carl Webber. This book is the beginning of what is going to be a part of a twelve series and later a cable TV series. So this should be very exciting!

Also, local entrepreneur and author Pearl Walker-Ali will be joining us to talk about her book “Locks, Braids and Natural Styles”. I hope to see your face in the place!

October Meeting at T.J. Mulligans: A House Divided by Kimberla Lawson Roby

Can you believe it! We are done with the Reverend Curtis Black! Ten Months and Ten whole installments we have come to the close of the largest series we will ever read in the WHM Book Club. Throughout this series, there has been a lot of plot twists and so on. We had no idea, that Charlotte would end up being even worst than Curtis Black was. Who thought that you would actually end up liking him a little bit, but we know its only because Charlotte was off the chain...

Local Featured Author for October: Kimberly Kirby

Our local featured author for the What's Happening Myron Book Club for October is Kimberly Kirby, an African American writer from right here in Memphis. Her book is called “Joy”.

Joy is the first in a series that follows the life of Joy, Jonathan, Carla, and everyone’s “ favorite” couple Angela and David. This book is personal to me because it comments on why we as women spend so much time in unhealthy relationships we know weren’t working from the start. I hope you enjoy reading it just as much as I enjoyed writing and sharing it with reader s like you!

After graduating from Kirby High School, she attended The University of Tennessee at Martin where she graduated with a bachelors of Science. Kimberly has written several songs, children’s books, poems and screenplays that are slated for publication soon. She resides in Memphis with her husband, Rod Kirby, and their cat “Mighty Max.”

The Whats Happening Myron Book Club meeting for September was a lot of fun! August Meeting at Memphis Nites: Love, Honor & Betray by Kimberla Lawson Roby

The What’s Happening Myron Book Club was once again a success as we continued to invade East Memphis. We met a second time at Memphis Nites on Kirby Parkway and were well received by the staff and management once again. They even prepared a special menu for the WHM Book Club. Local author Florence Howard spoke about her book, “From Sagging to Success” and shared the story of one of the individuals featured in her book. Even State Representative G.A. Hardaway stopped by to say hi. And as always we had a great time hanging out with each other. Were about to do it again next month so get ready. Instead of the third Saturday, were gonna meet on the 4th Saturday which is September 28th. This will give everyone the opportunity to attend the BWABC Literary Conference on September 21st. We will be at a new location in East Memphis. September’s meeting will be at The Legend located at 7144 Winchester Road from 4 until 6pm. July Meeting at Memphis Nites: Be Careful What You Pray for by Kimberla Lawson Roby

The WHM Book Club meeting was a fun success once again. We had a ball discussing the book as Curtis Blacks daughter Alicia pretty much took a central role in this book. It was good to sort of see how Curtis' influence affected everyone else. I cant wait to see what happens next...Also, Author Summer Owens talked about her book "Life After Birth".

She also shared her true story behind her reason for writing the book in hopes that she will be able to help others through her organization, "So What!". You can keep up with Summer at her website www.summerowens.com.

It turned out to be a really good idea to expand and explore other parts of town for the July Book Club Meeting. Memphis Nites turned out to be a really nice spot. So nice that we are going back East for the August meeting. We will be at Memphis Nites again on Saturday August 17th from 4-6pm. The selection will be Kim Roby's "Love. Honor & Betray". We had a great time out at the What’s Happening Myron Book Club Meeting this past Saturday. We had a change of venue just for a month as we met at Fresh Slices Midtown. Local Author Sherri Scott stopped by to speak about her new book “Never Cast Your Pearls”. We had a great discussion about our latest book “Sin No More” by Kimberla Lawson Roby. It seems like the Reverend Curtis Black was somewhat “tame” in this book. I look forward to next month as we continue the Reverend Curtis Black Series with “The Best of Everything”. Kim Roby returns with A House Divided

May 2013 Local Featured Author: Sherri Scott

Sherri Scott is the What' s Happening Myron Local Featured Author for the Month of May. Her book is called "Never Cast Your Pearls".

Ms. Scott is a first time novelist and single mother of one. Somewhere in the middle of raising her daughter, Taelor, working full-time as a coordinator of student disability services, and pursuing her Masters of Public Leadership, she found the time to write Never Cast Your Pearls, a delightful novella packed with compelling lessons about love, friendship, and faith.

On top of her roles as mother, student, and author, Sherri is a budding social entrepreneur. Her pilot program for Living Pearls, a rites of passage program, was completed in the summer of 2012 to rave reviews from both parents and teen participants. The program is thoughtfully designed to help young ladies transition into adulthood successfully. It will be fully launched in the summer of 2013.

May Selection: Sin No More by Kimberla Lawson Roby

"Sin No More" by Kimberla Lawson Roby is the latest selection for the What's Happening Myron Book Club. The next meeting is set for May 18th at a NEW location, Fresh Slices located at 1585 Overton Park in Midtown Memphis! "Sin No More" is book number 5 in the Reverend Curtis Black Series...and yep, the Good Reverend is still at it. Don't you just love the guy? Well maybe not, but the books are good right? lol

As always there will be drink specials and great food. And as always the book club would not be complete without gifts right? The first 25 ladies will receive a free gift courtesy of our friends over at Keystone Labs, the makers of Ultra Glow. PLUS, there will be great drinks!

April Meeting at TJ Mulligans: Love & Lies by Kimberla Lawson Roby

The April 20th Book Club meeting was a lot of fun as we celebrated our 1st year anniversary! Time flies when you're having fun! We continued with the Reverend Curtis Black Series by Kimberla Lawson Roby with "Love & Lies". The crowd was nice as well! We thoroughly enjoyed having Christin Webb with us. April Selection: Love & Lies by Kimberla Lawson Roby

Are you ready? Then join me April 20th at T.J. Mulligans for the What’s Happening Myron APRIL Book Club Meeting! We’re continuing with the Reverend Curtis Black series by Kimberla Lawson Roby with the next installment, “Love & Lies”. There’s gonna be drink specials, door prizes, free gifts and lots of fun! March Meeting at TJ Mulligans: The Best Kept Secret

Once again a great time was had this past Saturday at the What's happening Myron Book Club Meeting. TJ Mulligans turned out to be a really great place to meet. They were very accommodating...and I know you enjoyed the "Curtis Black" drink right? We continued the Reverend Curtis Black series by Kimberla Roby with "The Best Kept Secret". A lot of you seem to love the good Reverend and hate him at the same time...how is that?

Jae Henderson spoke about her book "Someday" and we also got the opportunity to meet Christin Webb, who will be our local featured author for April.

The next meeting will be on April 20th. Same place, T.J. Mulligans 362 North Main in Downtown at 4:00pm. The next book in the series is "Love & Lies" by Kimberla Roby as well. March Selection: The Best Kept Secret by Kimberla Lawson Roby

If you have not checked out the “What’s Happening Myron Book Club”, here’s your chance! Since the beginning of this year we have been covering the works of Kimberla Lawson Roby. “The Best Kept Secret” is book #3 in her Reverend Curtis Black Series. February Meeting at Evergreen Grill: Too Much of a Good Thing

Thanks to all of you who joined us at the February Book Club Meeting at Evergreen Grill. We continued the Reverend Curtis Black series by Kimberla Lawson Roby with “Too Much of a Good Thing”. The Reverend Black is off the chain huh?

February Selection: Too Much of a Good Thing by Kimberla Lawson Roby

Join us on February 23^rd at 4pm at Evergreen Grill 1545 Overton Park in Midtown Memphis for the next Book Club meeting. We will be continuing the Reverend Curtis Black series by Kimberla Lawson Roby. This month we will discuss the second book in the series called “Too Much of a Good Thing”. January Meeting at Evergreen Grill: Casting the First Stone

A great time was had by all during the What’s Happening Myron Book Club January Meeting. We decided to return to Evergreen Grill this month as we featured “Casting the First Stone” by Kimberla Lawson Roby. This is the first of her Reverend Curtis Black Series. Of course we all discovered that the good Reverend Black is quite off the chain. Aaron Jordan, Jr., a local author from right here in Memphis was invited by to discuss his upcoming book, “The Power Within: A Woman’s Worth”. Mr. Jordan was quite compelling as shared his insight on “A Man’s Role” as well as “How Long is Long Enough to Heal”. His book will be released later this year. The food at Evergreen Grill was great as always. The next Book Club Meeting will be held on February 23 at 4:00pm. The location will be announced in just a few days. However, the next book is the 2nd in the Curtis Black Series which we will be covering for most of this year. That title is, “Too Much of a Good Thing”. But make sure you read “Casting the First Stone” before then so that you won’t miss any of the storyline.
